Clash of Cults

[Tonight on Victorian London: Emerald edition, we bring you a normal everyday ritual.

For the most part.

Under an abandoned church - the remains of the Order of Dagon - a new group has set up their own gathering. Shrouded in dark hoods, at least twenty people have been separated into groups of three or so with an overseer for each.

In short: it's sort of like a classroom for cultists. Most of these people are new and trying to harness the energy from the rift that infamously goes through London. Surely their god will be pleased. But before they try the main event, they really need to get their newbies into shape. Just going through some basic summonings and magical exercises, nothing that should be too bad.

Enter a problem: See that weirdly shiny relic in the center of these destroyed, watery ruins? Another cult happens to believe that belongs to their God. That cult is currently waiting in the shadows for a moment to strike and attempt to steal it. So maybe they ruined this harmless practice session on purpose or maybe the rift in spacetime was too much for the newbies to handle. Either way, their summoning doesn't go...right. It gives cult number two over there a chance to run in, magic ready.

So where does this leave you?

Maybe you were just summoned in. Maybe you were spying. Maybe you were invited as a witness to the training session. Maybe you were passing by when fireworks started blasting out of the church ruins.

Either way you should probably get out of here. There are strangely spacious sewer exits against the right wall, definitely wide enough for people to go through. There are crumbling stairs and doors going to winding catacombs. Maybe you can follow some of the escaping cultists and hope they don't turn on you. Maybe someone will rescue you.

All of it is up to you.]

There's a 'we' because I'm not letting you be fried by cultists, but you're unlikely to be able to navigate the water canals out without help, given they are very dark and very, very gross.

[Sighing, and putting her hands on her hips. If he looks now, she does actually have a swimmer-ish physique, although not as toned or chiseled as any of them. She's a selkie, she doesn't have to do crazy training, okay.]

Do you really want me to explain everything here?

N-No.

[He bites his lip in annoyance at the stutter, irritated both by his own pointless question and the fact that he let himself be flustered. He's supposed to be good under pressure, even if he's honestly not sure what kind of pressure is even happening here other than how-to-pretend-you're-sane.

That she's so composed makes it worse.]

... You know your way around this place.

[The realization is as abrupt as his attention finally landing on things other than 'girl', 'poker face', and 'not as suspicious as the rest of everybody'. There are a lot of whys crowding around right now, but she's right; they need to get the hell out of here.]

I've been here about a month. Let's hurry.

[She turns towards one of the pools, and if he's not quick in following her, she's gonna get dragged.]

[Rin bites down on another inane (and possibly rude) question about the here in that answer. He really needs to get a grip.

He does match her step for step, already having started moving before she did, even if straightening to keep up makes him feel like a prime target again and he speeds up reflexively. He feels better once they're moving -- though why they're heading towards a puddle is anyone's guess.]

... Oi.

[He starts to detour around it without waiting for her answer.]
